Toothache at Night: What You Can Do Before You Reach the Clinic

Simple steps to settle the pain until you can see a dentist, and the signs that mean you should not wait.

Tooth pain often feels worse at night because lying flat sends more blood to the head, and there is nothing else to distract you. These steps may ease discomfort until you can be seen, but they do not fix the cause.

Things that can help

  • Rinse gently with warm salt water
  • Floss softly in case food is stuck
  • Keep your head slightly raised with an extra pillow
  • Hold a cold pack against the cheek for short periods
  • Take an over-the-counter pain reliever only as directed on its label

Things to avoid

  • Do not place aspirin or any tablet directly on the gum
  • Avoid very hot or very cold food and drink
  • Do not try to remove a lump or pop an abscess yourself

When to seek urgent help

Swelling that spreads to the face or neck, fever, trouble swallowing or breathing, or injury after an accident need urgent medical attention. For other tooth pain, call us on +91-9971261414 the next morning and tell us how long it has been going on.
