About this treatment
A crown is a cap that fits over a tooth to restore its shape, strength and appearance. A bridge uses crowns on neighbouring teeth to hold an artificial tooth in the gap. Both are used when a filling is not enough or when a tooth has been lost.
When you may need it
- A large filling that keeps breaking
- A cracked or weakened tooth
- A tooth that has had a root canal
- Worn-down or badly discoloured teeth
- A gap where a tooth is missing and neighbours are healthy
How treatment works
- ExaminationWe check the tooth, the gum and the bite and take X-rays where needed.
- Preparing the toothUnder local anaesthesia the tooth is shaped to make room for the crown.
- Impression or scanAn exact record of your teeth is taken so the crown fits properly.
- Temporary crownA temporary crown protects the tooth while the final one is made.
- FittingThe permanent crown or bridge is checked for colour, fit and bite, then cemented in place.
What it feels like. Treatment is done under local anaesthesia. Teeth can be slightly sensitive for a few days after preparation. Materials differ in strength, look and cost; your dentist will explain which are suitable for your tooth and your budget.
Aftercare and tips
- Clean carefully around the crown edge and under a bridge using floss threaders or interdental brushes
- Avoid biting very hard objects such as ice or pen caps
- Attend regular check-ups so we can check the margins and gums
- Let us know if the bite feels high or the crown loosens
