About this treatment
A dental implant replaces the root of a missing tooth with a small titanium post placed in the jawbone. Once the bone has healed around it, a crown is attached on top. The result is a tooth that looks natural, stays firmly in place and does not rely on neighbouring teeth for support.
When you may need it
- You have lost one or more teeth to decay, gum disease or injury
- Your dentures feel loose or uncomfortable
- You avoid certain foods because of gaps
- You want to avoid grinding down healthy teeth for a bridge
- You are worried about the jawbone shrinking where a tooth is missing
How treatment works
- Consultation and scanWe examine your mouth, review your health history and use X-rays or a scan to check bone quality and position.
- Treatment planYou receive a clear plan, the number of visits expected and an estimate before anything starts.
- Placing the implantUnder local anaesthesia the implant is placed in the jawbone. Some cases need bone support (grafting) first.
- HealingThe bone grows around the implant over the following months. A temporary solution can be arranged where suitable.
- Crown fittingA custom crown is attached and the bite is checked so it feels natural.
What it feels like. Implant placement is done under local anaesthesia. Some swelling and soreness for a few days is normal and usually settles with the care instructions we give you. Healing time differs from person to person, so we plan around your jaw and your health rather than a fixed calendar.
Aftercare and tips
- Keep the area clean; brush gently and follow any rinse we advise
- Avoid smoking, which slows healing and puts implants at risk
- Eat soft food at first and avoid chewing hard on the new area
- Attend your review visits so we can check healing
- After the crown, clean around it daily just like a natural tooth
